
Silicon carbide is one of the most effective abrasive media for glass sandblasting applications due to its exceptional hardness, sharp angular particles, and consistent cutting performance. It is widely used to create frosted finishes, decorative patterns, logos, privacy glass, and anti-glare surfaces on architectural, automotive, and decorative glass products. Compared with conventional abrasives, silicon carbide produces cleaner edges, finer surface textures, and more uniform etching while minimizing processing time. Green silicon carbide is particularly suitable for precision glass blasting because of its higher purity and sharper crystal structure, making it ideal for applications requiring excellent surface quality and detailed engraving.
Silicon carbide for glass sandblasting is available in a broad range of FEPA grit sizes to accommodate different blasting requirements. Coarse grits such as F36–F60 are commonly used for deep engraving and aggressive surface texturing. Medium grades F70–F120 provide an excellent balance between cutting efficiency and surface uniformity, making them suitable for decorative frosting and general glass processing. Fine grits F150–F220 are ideal for producing smooth matte finishes, intricate designs, and precision engraving without causing excessive surface damage. For ultra-fine decorative applications, micro grits ranging from F230 to F1200 deliver exceptional detail and consistent surface quality. Manufactured with high purity, controlled particle size distribution, and excellent friability, silicon carbide ensures stable blasting performance, long media life, reduced dust generation, and repeatable results in both manual and automated glass sandblasting systems.
Silicon carbide offers extremely high hardness (Mohs 9.2–9.3), sharp cutting edges, and excellent self-sharpening properties, allowing it to produce uniform frosted finishes and precise engraved patterns with high efficiency. It also provides better cutting performance and longer service life than many conventional blasting abrasives.
The ideal grit size depends on the desired surface finish. F36–F60 is recommended for deep engraving and heavy texturing, F70–F120 is suitable for general frosting and decorative glass, while F150–F220 produces smoother matte finishes and fine decorative patterns. Micro grits F230–F1200 are commonly used for precision engraving and high-end decorative applications.
For most glass sandblasting applications, green silicon carbide is the preferred choice because of its higher purity, sharper crystal structure, and superior cutting performance, which result in cleaner engraving and finer surface finishes. Black silicon carbide can also be used for general-purpose glass blasting where cost efficiency is a higher priority, making it suitable for large-area frosting and less demanding decorative applications.
